PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To carry out the humane, religiously compliant slaughter of animals according to Halal (Zabihah) guidelines; ensuring the meat meets Farmers Meat Market’s required standards of hygiene, quality, animal welfare, and Halal certification, for both domestic consumption and export. The role ensures compliance with all relevant Halal, food safety, and export regulations.
KEY JOB OUTPUTS:
Animal Welfare
- Perform ritual slaughter in compliance with Islamic law: recitation of intention (if required), correct throat‑cutting of the jugular veins, carotid arteries, and windpipe in one clean swift cut.
- Ensure the Sheep is alive and healthy just prior to slaughter; ensure bleeding is thorough.
- Handle Sheep humanely before, during, and after slaughter: calm their movement, no unnecessary pain, stress or injury.
- Inspect Sheep for fitness (health, absence of disease) before slaughter.
Quality
- Maintain very high levels of cleanliness in the slaughter area, with tools, knives and other equipment.
- Ensure carcasses are handled, cooled, stored in sanitary conditions.
- Clean and sanitize surfaces, workstations before and after operations.
- Verify that all processes conform to Halal certification requirements (e.g. by the Namibia Islamic Halal Association or other recognized bodies), export standards, EU / international export regulations (if relevant).
- Coordinate with QA / inspection teams.
- Ensure knives / blades are sharp, well‑maintained, sterilized
- Maintain other equipment used in slaughter (e.g. restraining equipment, bleeding rails) so they operate correctly and safely.
- Follow occupational health & safety regulations and report hazards or accidents.
- Work with and under supervision of management.
- Communicate any issues (animal health, process deviations, equipment problems) promptly.
