Purpose of this C2 Estimator position:
To drive the full scope of estimations in a project-based environment across the Marine and/or Industrial Divisions by ensuring that quotations are produced sufficiently, timeously and professionally.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12, Diploma (NQF 6) in relevant Engineering, Fabrication, or Commercial field.
- Minimum 3 years' estimation experience, preferably within an engineering or fabrication environment.
- Interpreting technical drawings.
- Material Knowledge.
- Basic understanding of job costing and commercial awareness.
- Familiarity with quality systems and document control processes.
- Strong manufacturing knowledge and experience.
- Experience in an engineering services/fabrication environment.
- Understanding of health, safety, and environmental considerations when preparing estimates.
- Computer Literacy (MS Office, Excel & Projects).
- Exposure to Auto CAD, Autodesk, ERP systems and/or estimation software.
Preferred/Advantageous:
- Relevant certification in mechanical, marine, or structural engineering.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cross-Functional Estimation Input Control.
- Support the use of standardised estimation templates by engaging with input providers and raising recurring input issues to the Line Manager.
- Engage with other departments to collect complete and accurate input information required for estimates (e.g. drawings, BOQs, client specs).
- Validate that all required fields in the standard estimation template are properly populated before proceeding to costing.
- Raise repeated input gaps with the Project Manager or Line Manager for resolution.
- Provide feedback to upstream stakeholders on recurring data omissions that impact quotation accuracy or turnaround time.
Estimation Formulation and Technical Review
- Evaluate the scope of work and flag discrepancies for clarification.
- Compile detailed quotes to support operational planning and resource allocation, ensuring traceability and version control.
Customer Interaction and Commercial Communication
- Liaise Project Manager and Superintendent to clarify scope and expectations.
- Document client-driven changes or clarifications and reflect them in updated quotations.
- Draft formal quotations in line with approved pricing structures and submit for managerial approval before client release.
- Maintain clear and structured written records of all quote-related correspondence to prevent potential disputes.
Internal Cost Management and Planning
- Capture and submit cost tracking data to support ERP system/estimation software updates and commercial performance analysis.
- Maintain ERP system/estimation software and support commercial performance analysis by submitting cost data to management.
Post-Award and Handover
- Ensure complete handover of awarded project quotes, supporting documentation, and client terms to Operations.
- Provide quote background, calculation logic, and documented assumptions to assist Project Managers in understanding the basis of the quotation and supporting their margin review process.
- Assist in compiling and documenting variation orders (VOs) in collaboration with the Project Manager, ensuring traceability of scope and cost adjustments
Compliance and Documentation
- Follow documentation policies and procedures, and report any issues in documentation or traceability to the Line Manager.
- Apply and maintain structured records of all estimate versions, approvals, and relevant correspondence.
- Ensure adherence to company quality standards and safety practices as defined in legislation and policies.
General and Ad hoc Duties
- Attend to any reasonable request made by the Line Manager that falls within your work scope.
- Adhere to company quality standards and excellent engineering practices at all times.
- Perform overtime work when requested.
- Keep confidential documents and trade secrets of the Company secure.
- Relieve and assist in all required areas during periods of absence or crisis.
- Attend to any reasonable request made by SLT and GLT.
- Report, and where possible handle, cases of accident, fire, theft, loss, damage, or contravention of regulations.
- Attend meetings, training courses, workshops or seminars as required.
- Adhere to Company policies and procedures and maintain Company standards.

Work Environment:
The role is based at Kraatz’s Walvis Bay facility, with occasional travelling. It involves close coordination with project teams, draughtspersons, and clients in a high-precision, deadline-driven setting. The environment demands strong analytical focus, strict adherence to company standards, and compliance with SHEQ protocols. The estimator must operate with professionalism, accuracy, and collaboration across technical and commercial functions.
