Purpose of this Mechanical Fitter position:
To safely and accurately maintain, install, dismantle and assemble all types of mechanical components to the highest level of workmanship and quality in order to satisfy the needs and requirements of our company.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 & National Trade Certificate in Fitting & Turning from an accredited institution.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to work in confined spaces, elevated platforms, and demanding environmental conditions.
- Three (3) years’ relevant experience in a fabrication environment in the marine industry with tasks such as:
- Mechanical fitting, assembly, and maintenance of marine and offshore components.
- Reading and interpreting technical, mechanical, and isometric drawings.
- Precision alignment, shaft fitting, bearing installation, and bolting techniques.
- Fabrication, installation, and maintenance of structural steel, piping, and mechanical systems.
- Safe use of machining, grinding, and welding preparation techniques.
Preferred/Advantageous:
- Health & Safety: Knowledge of the Namibian Labour Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and ISO 45001 standards.
KEY DELIVERABLES:
Accurate measurement of parts and interpretation of mechanical drawings
- Understand and interpret technical drawings.
- Calculate and determine, spare parts, special tools, materials and specific consumables.
- Request materials from supervisor and verify correctness of received materials.
- Mark, strip, clean, inspect, calibrate, repair, overhaul, service, test, assemble and reinstate all mechanical components and equipment.
Strip, install and commission all mechanical components and equipment as required.
- Conduct inspections and functional tests on mechanical components before and after installation.
- Perform accurate alignment on shafts, couplings, gearboxes, etc.
- Take accurate measurements using clock gauges, feeler gauges, calipers, micrometer, verniers calipers, etc.
- Demonstrate the correct and safe use of liquid nitrogen, dry ice.
- Demonstrate the correct and safe use of oil bath and bearing heaters.
- Perform proper bolt torque techniques, gear back lash setting, key to coupling and shaft to taper fitting methods.
- Demonstrate proper lapping methods, such as face to face lapping, flat surface lapping plate, etc.
- Demonstrate proper and safe use of hand tool, equipment and machinery and report all non-conformities to supervisor
- Perform basic required gas cutting and welding.
- Safe handling and rigging up to 5 tons during mechanical work process.
- Ensure all work aligns with company process/procedure/standard of practice and quality standards.
- Identify, document, and report non-conformities and participate in root cause analysis for corrective actions.
- Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on mechanical components to reduce downtime.
- Ensure the proper disposal of waste materials (oils, metal scraps, hazardous substances) in accordance with ISO 14001 environmental standards.
- Follow best practices in spillage control and safe handling of lubricants and chemicals.
Health and Safety
- Adhere to company HSE policies, procedures and SOPs, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
- Complete “5 Steps” safety task observation.
- Complete risk assessment with a team and/or Supervisor and/or client representative on site.
- Adhere to company and legislative Health, Safety and Environmental standards.
- Apply and encourage good housekeeping practices.
- Ensure proper waste management, material handling, and hazardous substance disposal in compliance with environmental regulations.
Ad hoc duties
- Keep confidential documents and trade secrets of the Company secure.
- Adhere to Company policies and procedures and maintain Company standards.
- Supervise small work teams as per supervisors instructions
- Provide on the job training and skills development for assigned assistants.
- Attend to any reasonable request made by the Line Manager that falls within your works cope.
- Maintain the Company’s standards and ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to
- Perform overtime work on request.
- Relieve and assist in all areas during periods of absence or crisis.
- Attend meetings, training courses, workshops or seminars as required.
- Report, and where possible handle, cases of accident, fire, theft, loss, damage, or contravention of regulations.
