Purpose of this Procurement Manager position:

This position is responsible for leading the procurement department, overseeing cost-effective, end-to-end procurement processes, and ensuring alignment with business objectives. The role focuses on optimising sourcing strategies, supplier management, and procurement governance while driving efficiency, compliance, and value creation across the supply chain.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 4 Year Commerce Degree with specialisation in Sourcing and/or Supply Chain Management.
  • A Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience of which 3 years should have been on a management level.
  • Professional knowledge of business factors effecting the Mining & Marine Engineering fields, as well as latest trends in purchasing & supply chain management.
  • Experience in leading high investment sourcing initiatives and projects.
  • Experience with the SAP ERP system will be an advantage

 

Preferred/Advantageous:

  • Experience in the Mining & Marine Engineering industry or related industry.
  • Knowledge of and exposure to international procurement and import.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage Procurement Supply Chain performance

  • Manage procurement of materials and services for operational, production and maintenance requirements, in line with agreed forecasts and planning goals.
  • Manage optimization of procurement expenditure in line with Total Cost of Ownership .
  • Support process analysis activities driven by Shared Service Centre.
  • Manage Supplier Performance and implement supplier development programs.
  • Build and maintain strong communication skills with various stakeholders such as suppliers and internal departments.
  • Manage inventories as to agreed guidelines, levels and in line with professional classifications.
  • Support capital procurement expenditure, capital projects and asset disposal.
  • Lead the process of quality audits and inspections on goods received to ensure OTIF On Time In Full delivery.
  • Advise specialists and make the final decision on the discontinuation of services & procedures.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies within the supply chain
  • Work closely with the sustainability team to manage supply chain in with sustainability strategies

 

Procurement Strategies & Strategic Sourcing initiatives

  • Plan, maintain and execute procurement, inventory and logistics strategies.
  • Develop and plan Business Unit specific material sourcing strategies.
  • Lead and assist with the drafting of specifications for material & service sourcing in line with Shared Services and Business Unit specific requirements.
  • Obtain & develop Supply Market information to align organization’s processes to best practice and external conditions.
  • Source and lead multifunctional sourcing teams with the technical expertise to execute strategies and sourcing initiatives.
  • Research and implement all necessary supply chain governance to ensure that organization complies with said legislation and governance requirements.

 

Reporting & Forecasting

  • Liaise with key business units to determine their product and service needs
  • Develop, implement and measure KPI’s in line with Shared Services and Business Unit specific goals and objectives for the procurement team and function.
  • Support and execute planning and forecasting activities in conjunction with all internal and external interfaces, to ensure availability of materials whilst maintaining costs.
  • Report on Procurement and Inventory Control in line with Shared Services and Business Unit specific objectives.

 

Develop and Manage Policies, Procedures, Processes and Systems

  • Implement, manage and ensure compliance of procurement and inventory policies throughout the business.
  • Support, development and maintenance of standard inventory classification.
  • Develop, implement and maintain effective and efficient processes.
  • Ensure processes and procedures are fully documented and adhered to.
  • Articulate the procurement policy, strategy, and goals to both internal and external teams

 

Supplier Relationship and Contract Management

  • Continuously engage with key stakeholders to build and maintain effective relationships that have an effect on sourcing initiatives.
  • Advise Buyers on contractual requirements and needs in terms of suppliers.
  • Assist the team in categorising suppliers as well as in the development of the categorisation procedure and process.
  • Lead the supplier performance review process.
  • Effectively negotiate contracts with suppliers and third parties to secure best prices and terms
  • Lead the process of continuous review and evaluation of contracts and contract terms and assist with the reporting of contract non-conformities on the contract management tool Doc-It.

 

Strategic Commodity Management

  • Understand, research and evaluate the sourcing needs of the business as well as the status of the external supply market.
  • Obtain commodity-specific knowledge in the market in order to understand the competitive environment.
  • Lead the contingency planning process with regards to commodity availability and organization’s needs to plan for procurement output.
  • Generally analyse and evaluate the organization’s needs and formulate appropriate reactions to those needs.
  • Constantly takes socio-economic factors into account when making decisions, to ensure long term sustainability of commodities and sourcing initiatives.

 

Lead, coach and develop staff

  • Strong leadership skills to manage and motivate the procurement team to achieve organizational objectives and make difficult decisions.
  • Lead, coach and support direct reports.
  • Facilitate effective counselling and discipline of staff.
  • Provide relevant on-the-job training and conduct knowledge and skill transfer initiatives.
  • Manage staff performance.
  • Collaborate in recruitment and Selection of staff.
  • Collaborate with the Human Capital department in executing initiatives.

           Imports & Exports Management 

  • Ensure procurement activities comply with international trade regulations, including customs duties, tariffs, and trade agreements.
  • Coordinate with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and regulatory bodies to ensure smooth import/export processes and minimize delays.
  • Identify and evaluate international suppliers to drive cost savings while ensuring quality and timely delivery.
  • Assess and mitigate risks related to currency fluctuations, geopolitical instability, and supply chain disruptions in international procurement.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of all required import/export documentation (e.g., bills of lading, certificates of origin, import permits).
  • Develop long-term partnerships with overseas suppliers and ensure alignment with procurement objectives.

        Ad hoc duties

  • Keep confidential documents and trade secrets of the Company secure.
  • Relieve and assist in all required areas during periods of absence or crisis.
  • Attend to any reasonable request made by Senior Leadership Team SLT and GLT.
  • Report, and where possible handle, cases of accident, fire, theft, loss, damage, or contravention of regulations.
  • Adhere to Company policies and procedures and maintain Company standards.

Work Environment

  • 80% office based, ad-hoc travelling required.
