PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

 

To assist the Store Manager in managing the overall operations of the Fresh Foods Department by applying sound business principles and delivering service excellence to customers, ensuring profitability, food safety, and operational efficiency of the store.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

 

  • National Senior Secondary Certificate (Grade 12 / NQF Level 4).
  • Minimum 6 years’ retail experience, of which at least 2 years must be at management or senior supervisory level.
  • SAP/ARCH knowledge.

 

ADVANTAGEOUS

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Business Administration, Retail Management, or a related field.
  • Supermarket or food retail management experience.
  • Knowledge of food retail regulations, compliance, and food safety standards.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Stock Control & Operations

  • Manage departmental stock levels, product ranges, and quality in line with QDVP4 standards.
  • Ensure departments are trade‑ready daily and maintain FIFO stock rotation.
  • Review weekly stock takes, investigate variances, and implement corrective action.
  • Manage stock ordering, deliveries, and all stock movement controls.
  • Ensure no expired or damaged products are available on shelves or in back‑up areas.

 

Customer & Supplier Relationships

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Handle customer complaints and promote excellent service standards.
  • Monitor and manage external merchandisers.

 

People Management & Leadership

  • Oversee all reporting staff and ensure effective work delivery.
  • Plan and control staff scheduling, overtime, absenteeism, and annual leave.
  • Facilitate recruitment, training, coaching, and development of staff.
  • Conduct daily huddles and cascade key operational and business messages.
  • Enforce adherence to company standards, dress code, and protective clothing policies.

 

Financial & Performance Management

  • Daily review of departmental performance (Sales vs Budget).
  • Participate in daily mule train meetings and follow up on action items.
  • Prepare and manage manpower budgets in collaboration with Store Management.

 

Opening, Closing & Compliance

  • Conduct opening and closing procedures in line with company and security standards.
  • Ensure strict compliance with Occupational Health & Safety, food safety, and audit standards.
  • Conduct daily health and safety inspections and report findings to the Store Manager.

 

General & Ad Hoc

  • Ensure confidentiality of company information.
  • Attend meetings, training sessions, workshops, and stocktakes.
  • Provide operational support during absences or emergencies.
