Purpose
The Logistics Manager is responsible for overseeing the logistics operations, including the transportation, warehousing, inventory management, and distribution of goods. This role ensures the efficient, cost-effective, and compliant execution of supply chain processes, with a focus on service excellence, operational efficiency, timely delivery, and strategic vendor partnerships. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the incumbent collaborates with business leaders to align logistics strategies with the organisation’s overall objectives, drive continuous improvement, and support sustainable business performance. The incumbent is further responsible for driving and embedding the O&L Persona throughout the business.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Business Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years' experience in logistics and supply chain management, of which at least 5 years must be at a senior management level.
- Proven experience leading large-scale logistics, warehousing, transportation, and distribution operations.
- Demonstrated success in supply chain optimisation, cost reduction initiatives, operational efficiency improvements, and service level enhancement.
- Strong working knowledge of warehouse management systems (WMS), transport management systems (TMS), inventory management systems, and supply chain technologies.
- Experience managing third-party logistics (3PL) providers, supplier relationships, and distribution networks.
- Proven experience in strategic planning, performance management, and the implementation of continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong financial management experience, including budgeting, cost control, forecasting, and operational reporting.
- Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities with the ability to interpret operational and financial data.
- Proven leadership experience in managing, developing, and motivating high-performing teams.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Experience leading organisational change, business improvement projects, and operational transformation initiatives.
Advantageous
- Postgraduate qualification in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration (MBA), or a related field.
- Professional certification in Supply Chain, Logistics, Project Management, or Lean/Six Sigma methodologies.
- Experience within the FMCG, retail, manufacturing, or distribution sectors.
- Exposure to regional or cross-border logistics operations.
- Experience implementing or optimising ERP, WMS, or TMS platforms.
Responsibilities
Logistics Strategy Development:
- Develop and implement logistics strategies to support business growth, cost efficiency, and operational effectiveness.
- Align logistics initiatives with overall business objectives, ensuring that supply chain and distribution networks are optimized for performance.
- Lead the adoption of technology and automation to improve logistics processes.
Supply Chain and Distribution Management:
- Oversee all aspects of supply chain management, including procurement, warehousing, transportation, and distribution of goods.
- Ensure the efficient and timely delivery of products to customers, while optimizing routes, schedules, and transportation modes.
- Manage third-party logistics (3PL) providers and vendor relationships to ensure high-quality service and cost control.
Inventory and Warehouse Management:
- Ensure optimal inventory levels are maintained to meet demand while minimizing excess stock and reducing carrying costs.
- Oversee warehouse operations, ensuring they run efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company policies and regulations.
- Implement inventory management systems to track stock levels, forecast demand, and minimize waste.
Cost Control and Performance Optimization:
- Continuously assess and identify cost-saving opportunities within the logistics operations, including freight, warehousing, and procurement.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, transportation costs, and warehouse efficiency to ensure continuous improvement.
- Lead efforts to streamline operations and improve the overall cost-effectiveness of the logistics network.
Risk Management and Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all local, national, and international regulations related to transportation, warehousing, and distribution.
- Develop risk management strategies to mitigate supply chain disruptions, including contingency planning for external risks such as supplier issues, natural disasters, and geopolitical events.
- Implement and monitor safety protocols within logistics operations to minimize risk to personnel and goods.
Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and mentor the logistics team, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
- Set performance targets, provide coaching and feedback, and ensure professional development for team members.
- Ensure that the team is trained in the latest logistics technologies and operational best practices.
Cross-functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Work closely with departments such as Sales, Production, Procurement, and Finance to ensure that logistics processes support broader business objectives.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to drive operational efficiency and support the company’s growth and profitability goals.
- Communicate logistics strategies, performance metrics, and key initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
Fleet Management and Optimisation:
- Ensure optimal utilisation of fleet resources through effective vehicle allocation, capacity planning, load optimisation, and route scheduling to maximise operational efficiency and minimise transportation costs.
- Oversee preventative maintenance programmes, vehicle licensing, roadworthiness, and compliance with all transport, health, safety, and regulatory requirements to ensure fleet reliability and minimise downtime.
- Drive route optimisation and delivery planning to improve on-time deliveries, enhance customer service levels, reduce fuel consumption, and support operational productivity.
